After a theatrical run that split critics down the middle, Ram Charan’s Peddi has made the jump to streaming. The rustic sports drama began streaming on Netflix from Thursday, July 9, giving audiences who missed it in cinemas their first chance to catch up at home.
Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, who previously wrote Rangasthalam and directed Uppena, Peddi is set in 1980s rural Andhra Pradesh. The story follows a spirited villager who rallies his community around traditional sport to defend their pride against a powerful rival faction, a theme that echoes the writer-director’s earlier work on identity and dignity in rural settings.
Ram Charan takes on the title role, backed by a cast that includes Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar and Divyendu Sharma. The film also carries serious technical firepower behind the camera, with music composed by A. R. Rahman, cinematography by R. Rathnavelu and editing handled by Navin Nooli.
On its Peddi OTT release, Netflix has made the film available in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, with a Hindi version reportedly on the way. Reviews since the digital release have been mixed, echoing the reaction the film received during its theatrical run, with some viewers praising its technical polish while others felt the writing didn’t fully back up the scale of its ambitions.
Even so, the pull of Ram Charan in the lead role, paired with Buchi Babu Sana’s growing reputation as a filmmaker of substance, is likely to bring plenty of eyes to Peddi now that it’s just a click away on Netflix.
